HOW TO CARE FOR NEWLY REFINISHED HARDWOOD FLOORS.
The first days protect the finish while it cures. Long-term care is simpler: control grit and moisture, use compatible cleaning products and prevent concentrated wear.
I prepared this guide using practical questions customers ask after refinishing, together with published Bona and National Wood Flooring Association care guidance. Sources are cited in the article and listed at the end.
FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FINISH ACTUALLY APPLIED.
Drying and curing times are not universal. Waterborne, oil-based and other finish systems have different requirements for foot traffic, furniture, rugs, cleaning and full use.
Keep the contractor’s written product information. If general advice online conflicts with the manufacturer’s instructions for your floor, follow the product-specific instructions.
PROTECT THE FLOOR WHILE THE FINISH IS CURING
Do not walk on the floor simply because it looks or feels dry. Use only the timeline provided for the installed finish.
When light traffic is permitted, avoid outdoor shoes, grit, sharp heels and anything that can concentrate pressure.
Return furniture only when approved. Lift each item—never drag it—and install clean protective pads first.
Rugs can restrict airflow or affect the appearance of a curing finish. Wait for the confirmed rug timeline.
Do not wet-clean, polish or apply household products until the contractor confirms the floor is ready.
Keep nails trimmed and prevent running, sliding, accidents and water-bowl spills during early use.
REMOVE GRIT BEFORE IT ACTS LIKE SANDPAPER
- Dust or vacuum regularly.Use a soft floor attachment without a damaging beater bar. Pay attention to entries and high-traffic paths.
- Use a hardwood-safe cleaner.Choose a product compatible with the floor’s finish and use only the amount directed.
- Use a clean microfiber pad.Dirty or contaminated pads can move grit and residue across the finish.
- Clean spills promptly.Blot liquid rather than spreading it. Avoid allowing water to remain on or between boards.
Bona recommends hardwood-specific cleaner and clean microfiber pads, and advises avoiding steam cleaners, oil soaps and multipurpose products that can leave residue or affect a wood floor.[1]
SMALL HABITS REDUCE SCRATCHES, DENTS AND UNEVEN WEAR
- Use breathable entry mats that will not trap moisture
- Place felt or manufacturer-approved pads under furniture
- Replace dirty or compressed pads before they scratch
- Lift furniture instead of dragging it
- Keep pet nails trimmed
- Use protective mats beneath rolling chairs when appropriate
- Control direct sunlight with shades or curtains
- Maintain reasonable indoor temperature and humidity
- Clean tracked-in salt, sand and grit promptly
- Inspect sinks, plants, appliances and pet bowls for spills
PROTECTIVE MATERIALS MUST ALSO BE FLOOR-SAFE
Furniture pads should be clean, secure and large enough to distribute weight. Check them regularly because grit can become embedded in worn pads. Avoid rubber, vinyl or adhesive-backed products unless the finish manufacturer confirms compatibility.
Area rugs can reduce wear, but they may also create color differences as natural wood changes with light exposure. Rotate rugs and furniture periodically after the finish is fully cured and approved for normal use.
DO NOT WAIT FOR BARE WOOD TO ASK ABOUT MAINTENANCE
Traffic paths can lose sheen before the wood itself is damaged. A professional maintenance coat may be possible when the existing finish is compatible, clean and still bonded properly. Once wear reaches bare or deeply damaged wood, a more extensive sanding process may be required.
Polish is not the same as a professional recoat, and not every polish is compatible with every floor. Bona specifically advises against using polish on newly refinished floors and notes that polish is unsuitable for oiled floors.[2] Ask before applying any coating-like maintenance product.

After a floor is finished, it is tempting to move everything back immediately because the room finally looks complete. I understand that feeling, but the first days are exactly when patience matters most.
I always want customers to keep the product-specific instructions, ask before using a new cleaner and contact us if they are unsure about furniture or rugs. A quick question is much easier than trying to correct avoidable damage.
Good care should not feel complicated. Keep grit and standing moisture away, protect the high-traffic areas and follow the finish system that was actually installed.

When can I put furniture back?+
Use the timeline supplied for the exact finish system. When approved, lift furniture into place and install clean protective pads before setting it down.
When can I put area rugs down?+
Rug timing is finish-specific and is often later than light foot traffic. Follow the contractor and product manufacturer’s instructions.
Can I use a steam mop?+
Steam is generally not recommended for wood floors because heat and moisture can affect the finish and wood. Use a compatible hardwood-floor cleaner and a controlled amount of moisture.
How should I clean pet accidents?+
Blot promptly, then use a cleaner approved for the floor’s finish. Avoid saturating board seams or applying harsh household chemicals.
When should I ask about recoating?+
Ask when high-traffic areas become dull or lightly worn but before the finish is completely gone. The floor must be evaluated for compatibility and condition.
