CAN PAINT BE REMOVED FROM WOOD STAIRS?

Often it can, but the right answer depends on what is beneath the paint, how many layers are present and the condition of the stair treads.

THE SHORT ANSWER

FIRST REVEAL THE WOOD. THEN PLAN THE FINISH.

Paint removal is detail-heavy work. Accolade evaluates the paint, tread thickness, fasteners, damaged areas and the wood that becomes visible. Some stairs can be restored beautifully; others need repairs or tread replacement before refinishing.

01 · BEFORE WORK BEGINS

OLDER PAINT NEEDS SPECIAL CAUTION

Painted stairs in a home built before 1978 may contain lead. Disturbing it by scraping or sanding can create hazardous dust. The coating and project conditions must be evaluated before choosing a removal method.

02 · THE PROCESS

REMOVAL, DETAIL WORK AND REFINISHING

Inspect

Check the stairs, paint layers, exposed edges, repairs and usable wood.

Remove carefully

Use the appropriate combination of controlled scraping, detail work and sanding.

Repair

Address loose fasteners, damaged wood and unsuitable filler before finishing.

Sample and finish

Review stain or natural-color samples on the actual wood before the selected finish system.

COMMON QUESTIONS

PAINTED STAIR FAQ

Can every painted staircase be refinished?+

No. The wood may be too damaged, too thin or unsuitable for the requested appearance. An evaluation is needed.

Will every trace of paint disappear?+

Not always. Paint can remain in grain, seams, corners and nail holes. The realistic result depends on the wood and coating history.

Can the stairs be stained afterward?+

If the exposed wood is suitable, Accolade can prepare stain samples so the customer can choose before stain and finish are applied.
