OLDER FLOOR REFINISHING GUIDE

CAN OLDER WIDE-PLANK PINE FLOORS BE REFINISHED?

Many can, but pine is softer than common hardwood species and older floors deserve a careful, floor-specific plan.

THE SHORT ANSWER

KEEP THE CHARACTER. ADDRESS THE CONDITION.

Age alone does not disqualify a pine floor. John checks remaining thickness, movement, fasteners, previous sanding, stains and repairs before recommending a full refinish.

01 · WHAT MAKES PINE DIFFERENT

SOFTER WOOD SHOWS ITS HISTORY

Wide-plank pine often carries knots, dents, color variation, old fastener marks and seasonal gaps. Those features may be part of the floor’s character rather than defects that should be erased.

02 · WHAT JOHN CHECKS

THE FLOOR DETERMINES THE SANDING PLAN

Thickness

Enough usable wood must remain above tongues, grooves and fasteners.

Movement

Loose boards and active gaps are evaluated before filler or finish decisions.

Surface history

Old coatings, contamination and uneven prior sanding may affect the work.

Final direction

Natural appearance, stain samples and sheen are considered on the actual pine.

COMMON QUESTIONS

OLDER PINE FLOOR FAQ

Should every gap be filled?+

No. Seasonal movement and wide or active gaps can make filler unsuitable. The floor must be evaluated first.

Will pine dent again?+

Yes. Pine is comparatively soft. A quality finish protects the surface, but no finish makes wood dent- or scratch-proof.

Can pine be stained?+

It can, but absorption and undertones vary. Samples on the actual floor help the customer choose with better context.
