Freshly sanded hardwood floor before stain and finish
REFINISHING PROCESS GUIDE

WHAT DOES A FRESHLY SANDED HARDWOOD FLOOR LOOK LIKE?

Sanding exposes raw wood. It is an important checkpoint, but it is not the floor’s final color, sheen or finished appearance.

THE SHORT ANSWER

RAW WOOD LOOKS LIGHTER. FINISH CHANGES IT.

A freshly sanded floor typically appears pale, dry and matte. Natural sealer, stain, finish chemistry, sheen and lighting all influence the completed appearance.

01 · WHAT SANDING REVEALS

WOOD SPECIES, GRAIN AND EXISTING CONDITIONS

Once the old coating is removed, color variation, board replacements, deeper stains, fastener marks and previous repairs may become easier to see. Sanding improves suitable surface wear, but it does not turn every board into identical wood.

02 · CHOOSING THE DIRECTION

SAMPLES BELONG ON THE ACTUAL FLOOR

Natural direction

A clear or natural system still changes the raw wood and highlights its species and grain.

Stain direction

Accolade provides samples and can mix compatible stain colors when a project calls for adjustment.

Lighting

Windows, bulbs, wall colors and time of day can change how a sample reads.

Finish and sheen

The selected finish protects the surface; sheen affects reflection, not the stain color alone.

COMMON QUESTIONS

FRESHLY SANDED FLOOR FAQ

Is the sanded color the finished color?+

No. Raw wood generally changes when sealer, stain or finish is applied.

Will all boards match after sanding?+

No. Natural wood varies, and replacement boards, species differences, age and light exposure can remain visible.

When do I choose stain?+

The project schedule is confirmed with Accolade, but stain samples are reviewed and approved before the full floor is stained.
