There is one split board near the doorway in our older house. Can the rest stay?
We’ll check the split, the surrounding edges, and how the board is supported before deciding on replacement. If the damage is contained and suitable material can be sourced, a repair to that area may preserve the remaining floor. The finishing area may be wider, and we explain that distinction before starting removal.
An old repair uses wider boards than the rest of the room. Can that be corrected?
We’ll measure the original pattern and assess what lies beneath the patch. Replacing mismatched boards may improve the layout, but the opening and available material determine how the repair can be arranged. We’ll explain grain and color differences as well as the sanding needed to help it blend with the surrounding floor.
Can we add hardwood in a family room without raising it above the old hall?
We’ll compare the finished hall height with the family room’s subfloor and any layers scheduled for removal. Product thickness, preparation, and door clearances all matter. We’ll explain whether a flush connection is realistic or a transition is needed before ordering material, rather than making that decision after installation begins.
The finish is dark but the old boards look sound. Can we lighten them?
We’ll look at the coating, species, stains, and remaining wood before recommending sanding and samples. Removing an old finish can change the appearance substantially, but the natural color and any deep discoloration set limits. Where suitable, we test samples on your floor so you can see the likely result before choosing a finish.
