Can you restore antique wide-plank floors without replacing them?
We’ll look at each floor’s thickness, wear, fasteners, and repairs. Sound original boards may be worth preserving even when they show age. Our historic Weston project is an example of refinishing existing wide-plank floors rather than starting over.
Will sanding remove the old saw marks and uneven edges?
It can reduce those features, so we discuss what you want to preserve before choosing the sanding approach. Removing too much wood can also weaken thin areas. We balance surface improvement with the condition of the original boards.
Can a repair use boards that look old enough to fit the room?
We’ll look at the original dimensions, species, and character before looking for compatible material. Suitable replacement or reclaimed wood may be considered when available. We’ll explain the sourcing and likely appearance before we start.
Should every gap in the wide boards be filled?
No single treatment suits every gap. We’ll look at whether it is seasonal, stable, or related to loose or damaged wood. Some openings are part of an old floor’s character; filling moving gaps can lead to failed repairs.
